The Veblen City Council met in regular session Tuesday April 14, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Veblen City Hall. Mayor Charles Baus presided with Councilpersons T. Henning, K. Hofland, A.
Adams, K. Anderson and M. Mertens present. A quorum was declared. Karie Geyer, Finance
Officer, John Herman, Maintenance, and David Geyer, City Attorney, were also present along
with Gail Vrchota, Jamie Herrera and Scott Admundson. The minutes of the March 10, 2015
regular meeting were read. A motion was made by K. Hofland to approve March minutes and
seconded by K. Anderson. Motion carried.
Maintenance report.
Completed wastewater collection and distribution training in Huron and taking test in
Pierre April 27
th
Two more classes to take to complete certification for City Maintenance of which are
offered in July
Passed applicator test for mosquito spraying
Organizing and cleaning up City dump
As indicated in earlier minutes, Council agreed to increase Maintenance wage to $15.00 once
training and certifications are in order. Council discussed increasing John’s wage to half of
proposed increase. A motion was made by K. Hofland to raise John Herman’s wage to $13.50, T.
Henning seconded; and, the motion carried.
Council discussed Utilities/Streets report.
Council discussed Liquor report.
Jamie Herrera of Cantina Bar and Grill asked City permission to host bean bag tournament across
the street from Cantina, which is City property. Council approved.
Council discussed Revolving Loan report.
New business:
Scott Admundson, Executive Director for Glacial Lakes Area Development (GLAD) gave an
update. Council discussed yearly GLAD contribution. A motion was made by T. Henning to
make a donation to Glacial Lakes Area Development for $1,500.00, same amount as last year, K.
Anderson seconded; and, the motion carried.
Council discussed Nuisance House and Properties. Multiple houses and properties do not comply
with City Ordinances and the City has comprised a list. Council, along with City Attorney, is
addressing the matter. T. Henning made a motion to adopt Resolution 2015-01 determining Lots
17 and 18, Block 10, Original, Veblen, Marshall County, South Dakota declaring property a
public nuisance, K Anderson seconded; and, the motion carried. More resolutions to come.
Council discussed better Landfill maintenance. People are misusing City dump and Council is
looking at solutions to better manage and maintain City dump.
Council reviewed progress with new Utility program and decided to wait to implement new
program until after the water/wastewater study is completed as changes to utility billing may be
necessary following the final report.
Council discussed status of the City Park and playgrounds. City is looking at grants to replace old
playground south of town.
